The Paul Kendel Fonoroff Collection for Chinese Film Studies

Theater flyers 剧院广告

In the past, a handful of leading movie theaters published programs with all the character and appearance of periodicals, including polychrome-printed covers. Most theater programs, however, were more modest, printed in monochrome on a single sheet of paper. The paper or the ink might be colored to compensate for the lack of lavishness, but content was conspicuously limited: the name of the theater, possibly a phone number or location, names of feature films and stars, showtimes, advertisements, possibly a plot summary, possibly a bit of movie news, possibly a cautionary note regarding late arrival or the inappropriate nature of the subject matter for young viewers.

The Fonoroff Collection contains 3,332 theater flyers, produced for theaters in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Southeast Asia.
