Mexico

This year, Mexico will conduct its decennial census. This is the first time in the history of Mexico's census that will count the Afromexica/x population as a separate group. In 2015, a survey by INEGI allowed the Afro-Mexicans as a group to self identify. The results were interesting, a total of 1.2% national population (1.8 million) self-identified as the ones with African ancestry. One must recognize that the addition of Afromexica/x as a separate category was a result of ongoing efforts by the community members as well as individual activists. Mexico has often recognized individuals with African ancestry. One of the examples that is often cited is of Vicente Guerrero. In 1829, Vicente Guerrero was the first black president of Mexico.
