¡Viva la Revolución Mexicana: 1920-2020!

The Full Circle

Every revolution comes full circle. However, the changes it ushers in can be felt through the following years. Mexican Revolution also ushered in changes to the existing social order in Mexico, but it did not escape any other revolution's trajectory. While some have argued that the Mexican Revolution has continued to this day, the year 1920 leads to the first stable government in Mexico. Álvaro Obregón led this government. He, who was a general from Sonora, allied with Venustiano Carranza to dethrone the Huerta Regime. In 1915, he became Mexico's war minister. In 1919, he launched his unsuccessful presidential campaign.

And in 1920, he launched an insurrection against Venustiano Carranza's government. In April of 1920, the Plan of Agua Prieta was signed. Venustiano Carranza was accused of co-opting the principles of the revolution. Venustiano Carranza was assassinated in May of 1920. His death was reported widely in the US Media. And following the subsequent election, Obregón became the 46th President of Mexico. Álvaro Obregón, thus the last Caudillo of the Mexican Revolution, launched in the era of stability until his assassination in 1928.

General Álvaro Obregón's gift to UC Berkeley Library

One of the cherished item in UC Berkeley Library's collection is a signed copy of his book, "Ocho mil kilómetros en campaña ; relación de las acciones de armas, efectuadas en más de veinte estados de la República durante un período de cuatros años, por el e. general Álvaro Obregón, y descritas por él mismo.," that he donated to UC Berkeley as shown in the image.
