About this Exhibit
This online exhibit is the companion to an exhibit in the Brown Gallery, Doe Library, UC Berkeley, December 2021 - July 2022. These exhibits celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Daily Californian, one of the oldest college newspapers in the United States, and one of the oldest newspapers on the West Coast. For 150 years, the Daily Californian (1897- ) and its predecessors documented the life of the campus, - triumphs (Nobel prize winners), tragedies (wars, pandemics), and the trivia of daily life (ads, housing, library fines).
The exhibit and exhibit poster were designed by Aisha Hamilton of the Library Communications Office, who was also the project manager for the production process.
We are grateful for the assistance we received in selecting materials. The Daily Californian Education Foundation Board of Directors advised us about Daily Cal alumni to highlight. Our University Librarian, Jeffrey MacKie-Mason, found a Daily Cal article about a campus mask requirement during the 1918 influenza epidemic; we included that item as well. Letters & Science 1class of Fall 2020 included browsing the Daily Cal as an extra credit assignment; as promised, the exhibit committee selected items from among their choices to include in the exhibit. These contributions are tagged in both the physical and online exhibits.
Both exhibits were created during the coronavirus pandemic, including a long period when the libraries were closed. They would not have been possible without the Library's Digital Collections, which include scans of many years of the Daily Californian (project is still in process).
