The Daily Californian: The First 150 Years

Gender and Sexualities

Gender and Sexualities

Exploring how gender roles, gender identities, and sexuality have been — or have not been —covered in The Daily Californian during its history could fill several exhibition cases. The selections included here present a few examples of stories that have appeared in its pages, featuring efforts to build community, educate, or bring about change.

This front-page article announced the formation of Prytanean, which honored scholarship and leadership among junior and senior women. Now the oldest women's honor organization in the United States, the society remains active today.

– "Women's Honorary Society Organization of Prominent Students Effected"

Appearing on the editorial page, this article featured the views of Clotilde Grunsky, Class of 1914 and University Medalist.

– "West Slow to Accept Its Women in Business, Says Vocational Advisor"

Featured on the issue’s front page, this article highlights a well-attended, “mixed” event sponsored by the Gay Student Union.

– "Gay Dance: Big Success"

The Between the Sheets column began running in The Daily Californian in January 1975. Volunteer medical aides at the Cowell Hospital’s Contraceptive Clinic (later Conception and Gynecology Clinic) answered questions about human sexuality meant to educate the university community. An example appears here.

“Out for Sushi” by Laura Lambert was the first of the Sex on Tuesday columns. Sex on Tuesday, which continues to run in The Daily Californian, is credited as one of the first student-written sex columns.
