Date:
1899
Description:
Mexico City, already the capital of the vast viceroyalty of New Spain, was declared a Federal District—much like Washington, D.C.—immediately after the Wars for Independence. In 1898, the Distrito Federal took on its current shape. A year later, under the guidance of Manuel Fernández Leal, secretary of development, a new map was made with insets detailing its topography, as well as its seven political subdivisions and their respective populations.
