Description:
This map of the Pacific Rim forms part of the narrative of Hatsutarō 初太郎, a Japanese sailor who, along with his thirteen crewmates, was rescued off the Inubōsaki 犬吠岬 coast by a Spanish ship and taken to Baja California. He appears to have lived in Mexico for two years before he made his way back to Japan via China. The map includes the nineteenth century spellings for North America 北亞米利加, Mexico イハメヒコ, and California カリホルニヤ.
