Visualizing Place Maps from The Bancroft Library

"Plano del puerto de Sn. Francisco"

Attribution:
José de Cañizares
Date:
1776
Description:
One of the great treasures of The Bancroft Library, this map was drawn by José de Cañizares on his second trip to explore San Francisco Bay. Cañizares was the first person to document the bay, with preliminary black and white drawings executed in 1775. This watercolor is a more finished work and depicts many of the natural features of the land—Alcatraz Island, Point Reyes, the Farallones—as well as recent human development like the Presidio and Mission Dolores.
