"Mapa del Valle de Sacramento"

Attribution:
John Bidwell
Date:
1853
Description:
John Bidwell, who led the first overland expedition from the United States into California in 1841, did not have formal training as a surveyor, yet he prepared nearly forty maps of ranchos throughout the interior of California, illustrating the extent of settlement during the Mexican period. In this hand-drawn map, he shows the many ranchos throughout the valley, providing information about the boundaries of each rancho in relation to others. This map of the Sacramento Valley also shows the important connection of the valley and its rivers to the San Francisco Bay.
