Description:
Many maps were produced after the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906, illustrating the massive destruction caused by the ensuing fires that ravaged the city immediately after the earthquake. The area outlined in red shows the extent of the fire’s damage, roughly four square miles. This map shows the steady recovery of the city—two years later—with the black marks showing new construction.
