Attribution:
Thomas Larkin
Date:
1848
Description:
Thomas Oliver Larkin was a merchant who arrived in California during the Mexican period and served as U.S. Consul to California. This map of the Sacramento Valley, which Larkin traced from John Bidwell’s “Mapa del Valle del Sacramento,” shows the ranchos in the Central Valley. It is the first printed map to note the discovery of gold in California, with the addition of the words “Gold Region” and “Mining District.”
