- Description:
- After the war with the United States and the loss of its northern provinces, Mexico had one remaining territorial dispute to settle: the Soconusco. This fertile region—which had originally formed part of Chiapas and is shown here as a western extension of Guatemala—was claimed by both nations for most of the nineteenth century. In 1882 the two countries formally signed a treaty to split the territory in two and give Mexico its more recognizable southern border.
