Attribution:
Abraham Ortelius
Date:
1579
Description:
Abraham Ortelius’s map of New Spain, which focuses on western and central Mexico from the present-day state of Nayarit to Guerrero, shows many of the newly created Spanish settlements intermixed with native communities. Ortelius pays particular attention to indigenous settlements of northern New Spain and their proximity to Spanish forts, identified with a diamond-shaped mark, as well as the rivers and lakes of the region.
