Visualizing Place Maps from The Bancroft Library

Atlas universel de géographie physique, politique, statistique et minéralogique

Attribution:
Philippe Vandermaelen
Date:
1827
Description:
This atlas was the first atlas produced with every map having the same scale, 1:1,641,836, or approximately 26 miles to one inch. It was also the first series of maps produced through lithography: the process by which a design is drawn onto a flat stone and affixed through a chemical reaction. Chromolithographs, or multicolor lithographs, are even more complicated and time consuming to produce, which meant that, as is the case with this map, color was applied by hand.
