- Description:
- This was the first atlas produced through cerography, a process invented in the 1830s by Sidney E. Morse intended to print maps quicker and cheaper than copperplate engravings but with less detail. It employed an image engraved into wax which was then turned into a positive plate through stereotyping or electrotyping. The process derives its name from the ancient Greek for cero (wax) and graph (to write) and was popular until the twentieth century.
