- This “map” or layout, as Mario Savio calls the drawing, helps visualize the secret refuge where he stayed as a white Freedom Summer volunteer in July–August 1964. The simple, nondescript rural dwelling and outbuildings capture the barebones existence of the residences. It is a map without direction or names. As Savio notes, “Even if this letter is opened it won’t make any difference because almost every farm in Holmes Co. appears to be layed out the same way. The house belongs to Mr. Howard, I don’t know which one, there are hundreds, of them...”
