The Daily Californian: The First 150 Years

Daily Cal History, Part 1

The University Echo was the first college newspaper published at the Berkeley campus. In 1874 the University Echo merged with the Neolaean Review, a literary review, to become The Berkeleyan. In 1897 The Berkeleyan changed its name to the Californian and in October of 1897 to The Daily Californian.

The Ink Bowl

Just before the slightly better-known Big Game, The Daily Californian staff play the staff of The Stanford Daily in a flag football game known as the Ink Bowl. Instead of The Axe, the winner takes home an X-Acto knife trophy. In recent years, The Daily Californian has won more frequently than the Cal football team.
