Shelf Life Preserving the Library’s Collections

Life Cycle of a Book

Preservation strategies vary according to where a book is in its library “life.”

Library collections are meant to be used, so inevitably books become damaged and in need of repair. Books are routed to the Preservation Department for repairs such as replacing and attaching missing pages, paper repair, and mending of sewing. It may also need to go to the UC Bindery for new covers.
