Microfilm and Preservation Replacement

The Preservation Replacement Division is where circulating collections that are too damaged to repair, or have missing parts, are sent for evaluation and replacement. Replacement options include microfilm and photocopying to create a stable, analog copy that preserves the content.

Newspapers present unavoidable problems for their long-term preservation. Newsprint is made from wood pulp fiber and becomes extremely brittle and fragile. It also requires significant physical storage space, and is difficult to handle without loss of parts.
