Curator: Liladhar R. Pendse, Librarian for Latin American Studies
The UC Berkeley Library holds a bewildering array of special-format print materials in its Caribbean and Latin American studies collections. The types of items featured in this exhibit—artists’ books from Cuba, cordel literary chapbooks from Brazil, Cartonera books from multiple countries, and fine letterpress books from Mexico—have been carefully chosen and acquired since 2018, when the curator was given the responsibility for these collections at the Library.
While the conceptualization of this exhibit could be dismissed as a theoretical pursuit or a dreamy license, the execution of the exhibit would have remained a dream if not for a miracle-working team of colleagues at the Library. The curator would like to acknowledge the Library’s exhibits program team members who patiently walked alongside him to ensure that the accepted social and community guidelines were followed and that intellectual property rights were respected. Among the individuals who stand out are Aisha Hamilton, Amber Lawrence, Michael Lange, Tiffany Grandstaff, and Dan Vaccaro. Besides these individuals, Besides these individuals, the curator thanks the members of the Library’s Collection Services Division for their Herculean efforts in having these materials cataloged.
As with many other Library enterprises, this exhibition would not have been completed without the precise work of colleagues from Library Preservation. A special thanks go to the library’s preservation team, Erika Lindensmith, Claudia Prado, and Elise Hempen, who guided the curator through the myriad of options for protecting and displaying the selected items. The curator is also grateful to Nathaniel Wolfson, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Berkeley, and his graduate students, who offered helpful advice on which items to feature.
