Visualizing Place Maps from The Bancroft Library

Granata Nova et California

Attribution:
Corneille Wytfliet
Date:
1597
Description:
Corneille Wytfliet’s map is the first printed map devoted to California and the American Southwest from the first atlas devoted solely to the Americas. It depicts the fabled seven cities of Cibola (Septme ciuitaum Patria), shown around a lake. The map illustrates California as a peninsula attached to the North American continent, not as an island.
